Canva Review 2023: Comprehensive Guide & Comparison

This Canva review has been updated to reflect the most recent price changes that will take effect in 2023 and to reflect our usage after a further year.

It takes years to master the complex art of graphic design, which frequently calls for artistic talent. If, like the majority of people, you lack any of these skills, you can still produce stunning graphics without obtaining a graphic design degree. To that end, we make use of streamlined online graphic design platforms that give you access to a simple image editor and expertly crafted templates for any application. Canva is the best tool of this type and it is very reasonably priced. You can create any type of design in minutes for just $9.95/month (or 30 days for free). A feature that typically costs up to several hundred dollars per month is also included with unlimited access to a library of 110 million stock photos. Adobe Express is a good substitute for Canva despite being slightly less effective. Canva Pro Team Invite Link Free 2023.

What is Canva?

With its drag-and-drop editor, Canva's freemium online graphics platform allows users to quickly and easily create professional-looking social media graphics, graphs, posters, presentations, logos, and much more. Canva was designed with ease of use in mind.

You can work on any project across all of your devices because it runs in your browser and as an app for Android and iOS. Additionally, Canva offers an integrated stock photo library with more than 60 million photos, illustrations, videos, music, fonts, and other media. Additionally, you don't have to begin your projects from scratch because you can select from thousands of totally free templates.

Who is Canva best for?

Canva is most suitable for solopreneurs, proprietors of small businesses, individuals (for personal projects), small teams, and marketers with little to no graphic design experience.

Canva stands out from more complex tools like Photoshop because of how simple it is to use and how quickly even non-designers can produce designs that look professional. This is largely due to the lovely templates that are readily available for almost any type of graphic design project, including social media posts, flyers, logos, invitations, and much more.

Anyone who doesn't have a powerful computer should use Canva. Canva runs in the cloud (you access it from your browser), so it works well even on budget computers. Powerhouses like Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator, which undoubtedly allow for more creativity than Canva, also need an expensive computer.

Canva is useful for everyone, but it's especially helpful for people on a tight budget, with sluggish computers, and with little to no experience in graphic design. A full suite of graphic design tools that even many professionals use are yours for $9.95/month. Canva Pro Team Invite Link Free 2023.

Pros

Canva is the best online graphic design tool, according to some benefits we've discovered over the years of using it for this purpose.

1. Templates

One of the key factors in Canva's success is the quality of their professionally made templates. As they are accessible for any graphic you can imagine, including logos, flyers, banners, posters, resumes, invitations, business cards, video intros, memes, and much more, they serve as the foundation of any workflow. The fact that they are made by qualified graphic designers is their biggest benefit. In other words, it's like having a personal designer create all the graphics while you just make text and color changes.

Both the Free and Pro plans offer a number of templates, but we have discovered that the free templates are frequently quite basic and unsuitable for the projects we are working on. On the other hand, you have every option you require with the Pro plan.

2. Photo effects

By clicking on a photo and choosing "Edit Image" from the top bar, you can access photo effects. By doing so, a side window containing various edits, effects, and filters will open.

Adjustments to the images' brightness, contrast, and saturation come first. There are filters that alter the color scheme as well, but we have discovered that because the JPG file is heavily processed, these frequently degrade image quality. The "Smartmockups" filter, which transforms your image or element into a mockup automatically, can also be used to create mockups.

Additionally, there are special effects like color, pixelation, mosaic, crop, prism, and screen. The shadows, which enable you to cast lifelike shadows on any image, are what we found to be the most helpful. There aren't any sophisticated editing options available here, though, so you can't make shadows that are even more lifelike. Additionally, the Blur tool and the well-known Background Remover are frequently used by users and both work admirably.

3. Unlimited downloads of stock photos, videos, and audio

Canva takes advantage of the fact that visual content is more important than ever in 2023 by granting you unlimited access to all of its over 110 million stock images.

By selecting "Elements" from the left sidebar and typing a search term like "office" into the search bar, you can browse all stock photos right from Canva's editor. The image cannot be downloaded directly, but you can use it in your Canva design and download it from there.

Although most of our needs for visual content are met by Canva's stock images, we occasionally have trouble finding the right one. We also keep an on-demand pack from one of the stock photo websites just in case.

4. Drag-and-drop editor

Canva's core feature is its drag-and-drop editor, which can be used to create any type of graphic, from logos to video intros. Because you can add, remove, resize, add, and change the transparency of elements with a mouse click, it is simple to use.

As you can see in the video below, we looked for stock images of "students" and then just dragged and dropped a picture we liked over the old picture. The text was then modified by simply clicking on it and entering a new sentence using a keyboard.

5. Free fonts

Purchasing fonts is quite expensive because each style costs about $30, and if you need to purchase several, the cost quickly mounts. Canva provides a wide variety of built-in fonts, especially those that are common in graphic design, to streamline the workflow.

You can upload your own font if Canva doesn't have the one you want. But keep in mind that you need a valid license to use premium fonts; if you download them without permission and use them in designs, you could face legal repercussions. Canva has a lot of fonts, but it lacks some well-known ones for graphic design, like Proxima Nova or Museo Sans. Because of this, we also adore using Adobe Express, which provides access to Adobe Fonts, a collection of more than 20,000 typefaces.

6. Publish to social media (or schedule)

All of the major social media sites, including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn, and Twitter, allow you to share graphics created with Canva. Additionally, you can add descriptions, but you cannot add social media platform-specific features like location, tagging other users, or adding partnerships. You can share the post with the Content Planner if you don't want to publish it right away.

7. Content planner

For what most customers require, a straightforward calendar that allows you to schedule a post and add a description, standalone content planner programs are expensive and overly complex. The content planner on Canva actually accomplishes that.

It is located on the homepage in the "Content Planner" section of the left sidebar. Then, to schedule a graphic you created, hover over the desired date and click the "+" sign. A post can also be scheduled directly from the editor, as an alternative:

  • Click “Share”
  • Click “Schedule”
  • Pick the date and time
  • Select the channel
  • Write a caption
  • Click “Schedule”

8. Brand Kits

Brand Kits are probably one of Canva's most effective but underused tools. And even though they work wonders for groups and businesses, they can also be helpful to individuals.

The main benefit is that you can quickly apply your brand's aesthetic (colors, fonts, and logo) rather than having to manually search for it each time. Enterprises are able to create more Brand Kits than Pro accounts, which are limited to one.

9. Animations

Canva added animations to previously static images as the popularity of videos increased in recent years, especially thanks to TikTok. Fade, Pan, Rise, and Simple are a few of the most well-liked animations that coincidentally resemble common camera movements.

A static image can be animated into a GIF or a movie without having to actually make a video, and dynamic advertisements and posts typically garner more attention on social media.

10. Multiple export formats

Canva is one of our favorite design tools because it enables us to export graphics in all of the most widely used still and moving image formats, including JPG, PNG, PDF Stand, PDF print, SVG, MP4, and GIF. With the exception of SVG, all of them are accessible even with the Free plan.

Cons

We have discovered a few issues with Canva over the years that have either hampered our workflow, made things annoying to deal with, or have left us wanting for certain features. Fortunately, Canva has undergone numerous updates over the years, which have fixed some of the bugs, but some drawbacks still exist.

1. Customer service could be improved

We repeatedly tested the customer service, but we were never completely satisfied. Typically, a response takes between one and three working days (so, if you contact them on Friday, you might have to wait until Tuesday or even longer). The wait time was increased by an additional 24 to 96 hours due to the fact that the responses frequently did not address our query, indicating that the assistant did not even read the request.

2. Incorrect SVG display field

The viewbox property is usually 20% smaller when you export a project as an SVG than it should be. Since SVGs are infinitely scaleable, this won't be a concern for the majority of users. However, incorrect viewbox size can lead to sizing problems, which can be a problem for web designers. We also reported the problem to Canva's technical support team, who responded by claiming to have resolved it, but the problem is still present months later. persists for months.

3. Lacking gradients

The only way to use gradients in Canva is through the asset library's vector gradients. However, this is not very helpful if you need to apply a gradient to a complex object or if the gradient colors don't match your needs (you cannot change them).

Gradients can only currently be used as any overlay. Canva should soon support gradients for elements and text, we hope.

4. Image editing (but not really)

We don't think that Canva's image editing is a con, but since the majority of other reviews list it as a drawback, we decided to explain why it isn't. Canva is not a post-processing application like Lightroom or Luminar, to start. This means that it cannot handle raw image files and cannot carry out sophisticated edits, but it also means that it is not intended to. You should use already edited photos and only make minor adjustments, if any, since Canva is a graphic design platform, which it is capable of. Advanced editing tools and raw format compatibility would unnecessarily complicate the user interface, potentially slow down Canva, and alter its overall goal.

Bottom line: Canva isn't designed to perform image editing well, so it doesn't. Use a specialized photo editor if you need to edit pictures.

How to use Canva

Now that we've covered all of Canva's key features, it's time to put them to use. We'll write a quick Instagram promotion.

Step 1: Create a design

The simplest way to get started is to click the larger purple "Create a design" button in the top right corner and select the kind of design you want to make. For this example, "Instagram Post" was chosen. The image editor will open as a result.

The presets for this feature are already the right size in terms of resolution, which is a nice touch. You'll also be able to use customized templates as soon as you finish your design.

Step 2: Pick a template

You will be redirected to the editor after choosing your design type, where templates are available. Although you can always start with a blank page, using templates will help you make the most of Canva. The left sidebar will open with pertinent templates.
